28 August 1930: Pius XI Declared St. Camillus the Patron Saint of Nurses

San Camillo copia 2In 28 August, by his Brief ‘Expedit Plane’, Pius XI declared St. Camillus the ‘Patron Saint of all Nurses’, together with St. John of God.

St. Camillus de Lellis worked an authentic revolution in the health-care system, conjoining physical care for the sick with psychological and spiritual care.

To serve Christ in the sick was his mission and that of his companions, and then of his heirs, the Ministers of the Sick. Today the Camillians work in almost forty countries in the world, bringing assistance and comfort where these are most needed.

We thus take this opportunity to pay homage to, and thank, all those nurses who every day follow in the footsteps of St. Camillus.
