Newsletter n. 50 Special Edition

PROVINCIA AUSTRIACA

Thanks to the Province of Austria, and in particular to Father Leonard and Father Alberto, we have managed to build a pathway that is coming into being in the buildings of a Viennese hospital where we have always been responsible for the chaplaincy and where at the present time over 900 people are being looked after. This is a hotspot for the European Union, a place where people who come from Syria, Iran, Pakistan…try to go back to hoping. In particular, since the first of May a programme has been begun for women migrants from Syria, Iran , Iraq and Afghanistan who were identified as being some of the people most in need. They are accompanied on a journey of integration made up of being given lessons in German and receiving cookery classes, painting and music laboratories, but above all passion and welcome.enza

KENYA: THE CAMILLIANS CELEBRATE THE FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR FOUNDATION

It is natural that Tabaka should have been the place where the Camillians of Kenya celebrated the fortieth anniversary of their arrival in the country. Even though the Camillians are by now present in various other localities, Tabaka always comes to mind when reference is made to our mission in this African country of East Africa. It is no accident that an article of 2003 published in the review Misssione Salute (‘Mission Health’) defined Tabaka as ‘the firstborn’.

The date 15 August 1976 has been established as the official day of the foundation, even though various Ministers of the Sick of the then Province of Lombardy and Veneto had already set foot in Tabaka for varying periods of time to explore the terrain for the establishment of our work. This terrain was in fact a hospital that had already been built a few years previously by the German Misereor in the parish area of Tabaka, in the diocese of Kisii. This is not the place to go over its history, piece by piece, starting with the long negotiations between Monsignor Ercole Brocchieri (of the diocese of Cremona) and Fr. Forsenio Vezzani (of the Province of Lombardy and Veneto). The details of it can be read in the easy-to-read book by Fr. Giovanni Bonaldi, I Camilliani in Kenya da 25 anni (‘The Camillians in Kenya for Twenty-five Years’, Verona, 2001).

The Camillians are present in about ten countries in Africa. After the first failed attempt in the Sudan at the end of the nineteenth century with Fr. For a short time they were also in Senegal. Nobody, however, knew that there are also Camillians in Burundi, even though ‘incognito’, and outside any juridical framework.

When preparing for the ‘Four Hundredth Anniversary of the Transit of St. Fr. VALLE DELL’INFERNO… HOW IT WILL BE

This is ‘Valle dell’Inferno’, the place where St. Camillus had his conversion on 2 February 1575. After four centuries, still today pilgrims and people devoted to him who come to this place find themselves lost in a desert land, without even a rock on which to sit or pray. As a commemoration of the conversion of our saint, there is only an altar with a large red cross, but the area around it is abandoned to the elements, and there is no protection or defence against grazing animals or passing predators. St. Camillus does not deserve this!
