THE PROVINCE OF NORTH ITALY

On Thursday 2 May, in Capriate, the second meeting on formation took place of the Camillian religious of the Province of North Italy. It had been organised by the Secretariat for Formation. More than forty religious and lay co-workers listened in Capriarte to the paper given by Fr. Antonio Menegon and Fr. Joaquim Cipriano on ‘The Forty-Year Experience of the ‘Madian’ Welcome Community in Turin: Between Service and Prophecy’. The celebration of the Eucharist was presided over by the Provincial Superior Fr. Bruno Nespoli. A fraternal meal ended the day.

Madian Orizzonti’ has its origins in the Order of Camillian Religious of the Province of Piedmont, and more specifically the Madian Community of Turin which since 1980 has dedicated itself to the free receiving and accompanying of poor sick people in line with the spirit of our founder, St. Camillus de Lellis.

Created to help homeless people, the elderly and those in difficulty, over the years it has adapted with flexibility to the new emergencies of poor people (immigrants, families in difficulty, abandoned minors). In recent years it has almost exclusively helped sick immigrants or immigrants who have been discharged from hospital, and in particular those without official stay permits who nobody looks after or can look after.

Helping and accompanying these fifty-odd people (some of whom are gravely ill or have physical or mental handicaps, cancer, HIV, are waiting for a transplant or are recovering from traumas) takes place through the presence and service of three Camillian religious who work full time and about thirty volunteers. This event, which was both religious and a matter of sport, had a dual purpose: to support the Italian Association for the Victims and their Family Relatives of Road Accidents and to be near to sick people who are cared for by the Camillian religious of Verona. All united under the slogan: ‘so that none are left behind’. CONTINUE HERE

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE, ROME

On Thursday 16 May about a hundred Rogationist religious, their co-workers and students of their educational institutions in Italy met at our Church of St. Mary Magdalene for a celebratory meeting with the saying of prayers, in the light of the charism and spirituality of their founder, St. Hannibal Mary Di Francia (Messina, 5 July 1851 – Messina, 1 June 1927).

St. Hannibal was the founder in Messina of the Congregation of the Rogationists of the Heart of Jesus and of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Divine Zeal with the charism of prayer to the Lord to make his Church fertile with holy priests. Born into an aristocratic family of Messina, this saint renounced all his possessions and became especially dedicated to orphans, placing on all poor people the merciful hands of God. He spent a great deal of time in the impoverished neighbourhood of Avignone, helping the poor and the sick. He was proclaimed a saint by Pope John Paul II on 16 May 2004.

St. Hannibal’s links with the Camillians was rather deep and were bound up in an indissoluble way with the providential history of the relic of the heart of St. Camillus. In Messina St. Hannibal carried forward the memory of the crucifer fathers (Camillians) of that city, acquiring the orphanage founded by the Camillian, Father Sollima. He also jealously kept the reliquary with a part of the heart of St. Camillus which, after the return of the Camillians to this Sicilian city, he returned to the Order of Camillians.

THE CHURCH OF SAINT MARY MAGDALENE IN ROME

On 2 May 2019 the much ‘longed-for’ building site opened for the restoration and above all for the strengthening of the bell tower of our Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Rome.

The historic fractures in the bell tower which increased with the seismic shocks of recent years – produced by devastating earthquakes in the centre of Italy which were also felt in Rome above all in our neighbourhood of ‘Campo Marzio’ which is famed for being in antiquity a marshy area and is traversed by streams flowing into the Tiber – had begun to provoke a certain concern.

PRAYER FOR THE VICTIMS OF ALL TYPES OF DISASTERS – CADIS

For all the victims of all types of disasters, for people who have lost their lives, for their loved ones, for the survivors, and for all those who work to provide help, we pray:

God in heaven, who has created and who preserves every existence,

You know all of our sadness and our suffering. May all the victims of all types of disasters be welcomed in your peace! Receive, we pray, in your mercy, our very many brothers and sisters buried by the forces unleashed by nature. Lead them to your home!

Comfort the pain of so many families, dry the tears of so many brothers and sisters, offer protection to the loneliness of so many orphans. Instill courage into everyone so that pain is transformed into a journey of growth and hope.

Generate in the hearts of Christians and all men and women of good will the wish to act so that the wounded and those who suffer because of these calamities experience the comfort of fraternal solidarity.

You who live and reign for ever and ever.
