The Camillian Task Force at the Side of the Victims of the Flooding in Uttarakhand

India FloodsThe violent flooding that struck Uttarakhand, a region in northern India, last June, left in its wake death and desperation. The estimated number of victims is very high (1,400 deaths according to official sources, as well as 5,748 missing persons), while there is a countless number of collapsed buildings, destroyed roads and bridges which were literally swept away by the raging waters.

The new government of the Camillian Province of India could not be indifferent to what has been defined as the worst disaster that has ever occurred in the Himalayan region. The Camillian Task Force, led by  Father Siby Kaitharan MI and by two other religious, was immediately activated not only to provide initial help but also to set in motion a long-term programme which since 3 August has involved thirteen volunteers. Everything is needed, not only food, drinking water, clothes, provisional roofs and medical care, but also psychosocial support to rebuild the lives of the survivors. The building of fifty lasting homes is also envisaged.

In all 107 families are involved in this demanding programme of rehabilitation promoted by the Camillian Task Force in the village of Simlakala, where the fury of the elements, if this is possible, struck in an even more terrible way.

We pray together for  all those who have been so severely afflicted and for the Camillian religious and volunteers who are helping them without holding back anything. The complete success of the programme of rehabilitation can be supported by practical help: every donation, however small, will have great value.
