The book offers a reflection on the phenomenon of euthanasia in history, in legislation and in today’s society, to show its various aspects. It also intercepts the motivations that may lead people to request euthanasia to escape suffering. At first glance it seems that the answer to this request may be regulation through specific laws or medical/health measures that allow euthanasia. The real answer, however, which often remains unexpressed or unreceived, consists in caring for the suffering person in the totality of his or her needs, surrounding him or her with attentive love, capable of providing concrete and adequate answers to the profound questions that emerge at all levels of human existence. To complete the picture, care realities that clearly show alternatives to euthanasia are also illustrated: palliative care and hospices. The main idea of this book can be summarized in the following sentence: the best medicine for the terminally ill, always effective and available, is a competent and caring presence enriched by human warmth, which only another person can offer.
